Got the call from Wildwood neighborhood. Guy's 2021 RX wouldn't see his only key. "Key not detected" on the dash, couldn't start it, stuck in his own driveway.
When I rolled up, he was holding the HYQ14FLB against the start button like the manual says. It worked, but who wants to do that forever? His fob looked beat up, like it spent time bouncing around with house keys.
I popped it open right there on his hood. Board 0020, battery clips intact, but the transponder coil had a hairline crack you could barely see. That's why the emergency start worked but normal detection didn't. The button could read the chip up close, but the car's antennas couldn't pick it up at normal distance.
Cut him a new emergency blade, transferred his chip data to a fresh HYQ14FLB shell. While I had the Autel out, I checked for any DTCs related to the smart key system. Clean. Just that damaged coil causing all the drama.
Twenty-five minutes total. He kept his old broken fob as backup since the chip still worked for emergency starts. Smart move. Lexus wanted him to tow it in, wait three days, and pay way more than what I charged to fix it in his driveway.
