Out in Mussel Shoals, I got a call from a body shop in Ventura. They'd had a 2011 RX come through for collision repairs, needed a smart key made after the job, and brought in another locksmith first. That locksmith hit an error partway through programming and walked away. Left the system in a fault state where it was rejecting all new key registration attempts. The shop called me to clean up the mess.

That situation is its own category of problem. It's not a standard all-keys-lost job anymore. When a programming attempt fails mid-sequence on this system, the smart key ECU can lock down and start throwing errors on every subsequent attempt. Some locksmiths see that and say "tow it to the dealer." That's not wrong exactly, but it's not the only option.

I brought my bench programmer. Pulled the relevant module, read the EEPROM directly, cleared the fault state, and rebuilt the key registration data from a clean baseline. The four-button fob with the factory FCC ID registered on the first attempt after the reset. I walked the body shop through what had gone wrong step by step, not to throw the other guy under the bus, but because they're going to encounter this again and they should know what a mid-sequence abort looks like versus a clean failure.

The whole job ran about 90 minutes on site. The alternative was a flatbed tow, a multi-day dealer queue, and a bill that would have made the shop's customer very unhappy. I keep bench tools specifically because some calls start with someone else's half-finished work.
