Got a call from a guy stuck out near Point Mugu State Park in Oxnard. He had come back from a week-long business trip, walked into the parking area, and his 2002 Lexus RX 300 would not respond. No chirp, no locks, nothing from the fob. The CR1616 had gone flat while the car sat.
He pulled the mechanical key blade from the back of the fob and got the door open, but the engine would not crank. Just the green key icon blinking on the dash, which on these first-gen RX 300s means the transponder ECU is not seeing the 4C chip signal. Sometimes a weak coil antenna around the ignition cylinder gets picky when the key is slightly worn.
I got there in about 35 minutes. Connected my IM608 to the OBD-II port and read the immobilizer status through the transponder ECU. His key was still registered. The issue was a stored communication fault that was blocking the handshake between the 4C chip and the ECU. Cleared the code, swapped in a fresh CR1616 for the remote side, and tested the ignition. Fired right up.
The whole thing took maybe 20 minutes on site. He had already called the Lexus dealer in Thousand Oaks and their first open slot was two days out. He drove home that same afternoon instead of waiting around or paying for a tow.
