Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

2002 Lexus RX Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy in South Bank called me on a Tuesday afternoon. He had just landed at the Oxnard area and gotten back to his car after a week away. The remote head key was doing nothing. No lock, no unlock, no response at all from the fob buttons.

He had already googled himself into a bad spot. One forum told him the immobilizer had lost its registration. Another said the key needed to be reprogrammed at the dealer. He called Lexus. They could see him Thursday. It was Tuesday.

I told him to try the key in the door cylinder first and see if the car would at least open mechanically. It did. Then try starting it. It started. That told me almost everything I needed before I even drove over.

I got to him in South Bank within 40 minutes. Popped the back of the remote head key housing, pulled the CR1616, and it tested at barely a third of its rated voltage. Swapped the battery, snapped the housing back together, and walked every button. Lock, unlock, the third button. All of them live again.

He had spent two days thinking he was looking at a tow, a dealer visit, and a reprogramming bill. The actual problem was a flat battery in a key he had owned for years and never once opened. He drove home that afternoon. The dealer never came up again after that.
