My key blade snapped in my door lock. Can you get it out?

Yes. On the 2026 RX the emergency metal blade inside the fob is what you use when the battery dies or the electronic system has an issue. If that blade breaks off inside the door lock cylinder, we can extract the broken piece without pulling the door panel or replacing the lock. Once it is out, we decode the lock and cut a new blade to match. The door lock cylinder on these is separate from the ignition system, so extraction is a clean mechanical job. Do not try to dig the piece out yourself. A damaged cylinder costs more to fix than the extraction does.

What exactly is a smart key and why does the 2026 RX use one?

Use a name-brand cell and make sure the battery contacts are sitting flush when you reassemble. If pressing the fob to the button does nothing, the problem is either the fob itself or how the vehicle security system is reading it. A few RX owners on forums have also found that the smart key reception function had been toggled off in the vehicle settings menu, which sounds strange but is worth checking before assuming a hardware failure. If none of that changes anything, it needs a diagnostic connection to find out whether the issue is the fob, the antenna, or the enrollment.

I bought a replacement fob online. Can you just program it, or is there a catch?

There is a catch, and it trips people up regularly. The fob has to be the correct part for a 2026 RX. If you are already getting a replacement for a lost or damaged fob, adding a spare at the same appointment is the smart move.
