Guy in Midtown neighborhood in Ventura called me from the long-term lot at the airport. His 2009 Lexus RX 350 had been sitting for about a week while he was on a work trip. Walked up, hit the lock button on his fob, nothing. Dead silence. No chirp, no flash.
He tried holding the key right against the door handle. Still nothing. The CR2016 inside that HYQ12BBT had drained flat while the car baked in the sun.
Here is the part most people do not realize: the remote portion needs battery power, but the 4D-67 transponder chip inside the key head is passive. It draws energy from the immobilizer coil around the ignition cylinder. So even with a dead CR2016, you can still physically unlock the door and twist the ignition to start the engine. He did not know that. He thought the car was bricked.
I got to the lot in about 35 minutes. Popped a fresh CR2016 in, tested all three buttons, confirmed the remote was talking to the receiver on 315 MHz. Then I connected my programmer to the OBD-II port and cleared the stored communication fault code so the system was clean. Whole thing took maybe 20 minutes on site.
