Out near the Carpinteria Seal Sanctuary, a woman had just left urgent care with her kid and a bag of prescriptions in the back seat. Her 2011 Chevrolet Equinox would not turn over in the parking lot. She hit the remote start button, nothing. Tried the key in the ignition, the security light on the dash just sat there blinking. The Passlock system had locked her out of starting.
She called the dealer. Closed. It was after 7pm. Pharmacy closed at 9. She still had to fill the prescription. Then she called me. I was about 20 minutes out.
I got there, plugged my IM608 into the OBD-II port under the dash. The OHT01060512 fob was dead on battery, CR2032 completely flat, and the transponder was not being recognized by the BCM. The ID46 chip inside was fine, the issue was a loose antenna connection inside the housing from the fob getting dropped one too many times. I swapped her into a new fob, programmed the Hitag2 chip to the immobilizer, and tested every button plus the mechanical blade in the ignition and the driver door lock.
From her phone call to the engine running was about 50 minutes. She made it to the pharmacy with time to spare. The dealer would have meant waiting until the next morning at the earliest. Sometimes timing is the whole difference.
