2020 Chevrolet Equinox
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Does the car really have to go to the dealer for key programming?

No. A mobile locksmith with the right diagnostic equipment can program a replacement smart key to a 2020 Equinox at the vehicle. The programming goes through the OBD port, same as a dealer would do it. The car doesn't move anywhere. Dealer service writers often frame it as a tow-in job because that's their process, not because it's the only option. We come to you, handle the cut and the security enrollment on site, and you drive away.

Q: What do I need to show to prove I own the vehicle?

A valid photo ID and your registration or title. We verify the VIN at the vehicle, either from the dash plate or the door jamb sticker, to confirm we're cutting and programming to the right car. Same standard a dealer would hold you to, just handled on your driveway instead of a service counter.

Q: My 2020 Equinox fob works fine at close range but barely reaches across a parking lot. Does the battery need replacing or is something else wrong?

Start with the CR2032. A partially drained cell will still power the fob enough to work at arm's length but loses range before it dies completely, so the key seems functional and the problem is easy to miss. Pop the old one out, check the battery contacts for any corrosion or slight bend, and seat a fresh CR2032 firmly.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can I program it myself to my 2020 Equinox?

Not on this vehicle. The 2020 Equinox smart key system does not have an onboard self-programming sequence you can run from the driver's seat. Registering a new fob requires a diagnostic tool connected to the OBD port. So if you already bought the fob, that's fine, it may well work, but you still need someone with the right equipment to pair it to the car.

2020 Chevrolet Equinox Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

She was in her driveway off Maricopa Highway near Meiners Oaks when she called. The flip blade on her 2020 Equinox fob had been loose for a while, but that morning the shell finally gave out at the hinge and the whole thing split. She was holding the fob in two pieces.

She had already called the dealer. They quoted her a number that made her pause long enough to start searching for another option.

I pulled up with replacement flip key shells and my blade decoder. The fob she handed me had the classic crack pattern right at the hinge pivot, same spot I see on these every few months. Blade was intact, electronics inside were undamaged. I decoded the existing blade cut before moving anything, transferred her circuit board into a fresh shell, cut a new blade to match, and snapped everything into place.

Then the part that matters: walked through every button, tested the door handles, confirmed the ignition read the key without complaint. Everything behaved.

She paid a fraction of what the dealer quoted. The dealer's number assumed a complete replacement. What she actually needed was a shell and a blade, and the job was done on her driveway in about forty minutes.
