2016 Chevrolet Equinox Remote Flip Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy in Sandyland Cove picked up a used 2016 Equinox from a small independent lot in Carpinteria. Clean SUV, one key, and the lot told him to sort out a spare on his own. He figured a hardware store could handle it. Reasonable guess if you've never dealt with a post-2010 GM key.

He called the dealer first. The number they gave him for a programmed spare stopped him cold. He called me next and asked if that was really what dealers charge. I told him yes, that's the range, and explained why: the flip key has a transponder chip inside that has to be registered to the vehicle's immobilizer before the engine will run. A blank key cut at a hardware store will open the door and turn the ignition but the car won't start. The immobilizer won't recognize it and it just cranks without firing.

I drove out to him in Carpinteria with the right blank already pulled from my stock. I cut the blade to match his existing key, programmed the transponder so the immobilizer accepted it, and synced the remote functions so all five buttons worked. He watched the whole thing from his driveway. Start to finish, maybe thirty minutes.

He saved a good chunk over what the dealer quoted. And now that he has two working keys, any future replacement is an add-a-key job instead of an all-keys-lost situation, which is a much simpler process.
