Why is Chevrolet key replacement so expensive at the dealer?

Dealers use their own factory diagnostic software, and maintaining access to that platform costs money that gets passed on to you. Then there's parts markup on the fob housing, labor time for programming, and whatever the service writer adds on top. The security work is real and it does require proper equipment, but the total dealer quote tends to reflect overhead and margin, not just the actual job. A mobile locksmith with the right tools does the same programming through the same OBD port for a lot less.

It's a folding key where the blade tucks into the fob body and flips out when you press the release button. The fob has 5 buttons for remote functions -- lock, unlock, and the other buttons on the shell. The blade itself carries a transponder chip inside it. When you insert the key and turn the ignition, the car's immobilizer reads that chip. If it recognizes the signal as an authorized key, the engine starts. If it doesn't -- wrong key, unprogrammed replacement, or a key that got wiped in an all-keys-lost procedure -- the car won't start even if the blade fits the cylinder perfectly. The remote functions and the ignition security are two separate things. A dead fob battery kills your lock and unlock buttons but won't stop the car from starting, because the chip gets its power inductively from the ignition ring, not from the CR2032.

Probably not. If the car starts, the transponder side of the key is fine. The remote buttons run off the CR2032 battery, which is completely separate from the chip. Swap the battery first -- and when you close the cover back up, make sure it clicks down evenly on all four corners. A slightly cocked battery is a common cause of weak or dead remote function that looks like a failed fob. If a fresh, properly seated battery doesn't bring the buttons back, then it's worth looking at whether the fob took physical damage or whether it needs to be re-paired. But most of the time, it's just the battery.

Can I buy a replacement fob online and program it myself?

The short answer: the remote functions, yes sometimes. The ignition security side, no.

GM built a self-programming sequence into some of these older key setups for the lock and unlock buttons, but it only works if you already have a working programmed key to start the cycle -- and even then it's trim and build dependent, so it doesn't always apply. If you're in an all-keys-lost situation, there's no DIY path. The immobilizer enrollment requires diagnostic equipment connected through the OBD port.

So if you bought a fob shell online thinking you'd handle everything yourself, you can still use that fob -- I can program it when I'm there. You're not out the money you spent on it. You just can't finish the job without the right tools.
