A car was sitting at a body shop near the Concha Loma end of Carpinteria. The body shop had called another locksmith for a key replacement on a 2013 Equinox. That locksmith attempted the programming, got a security fault warning on the dash mid-sequence, and walked off the job. The body shop foreman called me.
When I got there, the vehicle was throwing a persistent "service theft deterrent" type warning and wouldn't respond to a fresh programming attempt through the OBD port. The previous attempt had left the body control module in a fault state. Some tools will just loop and error out at that point, and that's when locksmiths pack up and tell you to call a flatbed.
I had my bench programming gear in the van. I pulled the BCM, read the security data directly from the module, cleared the fault state, and rebuilt the handshake from the ground up before touching the new key. Once the module was clean, the new flip key programmed on the first pass. Both sides - transponder and remote - verified working.
I walked the body shop guys through what had happened so they'd know what to tell a customer if it ever came up again. The whole job ran about an hour and a half. Longer than a normal replacement, but it finished same-day, on-site, for a fraction of what a dealer with a flatbed tow would have run.
