2013 Chevrolet Equinox
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How do I spot a scam locksmith before they show up at my car?

Three things to check before anyone rolls. Ask for a California BSIS license number - a real locksmith gives it without hesitation. Ask for a written total on the phone for your specific year and model, not a "starting at" number. And look up the company name independently rather than trusting the ad.

Q: Will the replacement flip key work exactly like my original?

It should, and we verify that before we close the job. On the 2013 Equinox flip key, there are two things that have to be right: the blade cut to start the ignition cylinder, and the transponder programmed so the immobilizer accepts it. The remote buttons are a third piece on top of that. We test all of it on-site - start the car, walk the lock and unlock, check every button.

Q: My 2013 Equinox starts fine but the remote buttons stopped working. Do I need a whole new key?

Not necessarily. If the car starts, the transponder side is fine. Dead buttons on a flip key are usually one of three things: a worn-out CR2032 that reads low but isn't fully dead yet, a cracked solder joint on the circuit board inside the fob from being dropped, or water intrusion around the button contacts. Pull the battery, check for any corrosion on the contacts, seat a fresh CR2032, and retest.

Q: I lost both keys to my 2013 Equinox. Can you still make a replacement without one working key to start from?

Yes. All-keys-lost on the 2013 Equinox is a job we do. It takes longer than a standard add-a-key because the immobilizer has to be reset before new keys can be enrolled - you can't just add to an empty system the same way. The process goes: access the vehicle security system through the OBD port, clear the existing key memory, register the new flip key or keys, cut the blade to the vehicle.

2013 Chevrolet Equinox Remote Flip Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A car was sitting at a body shop near the Concha Loma end of Carpinteria. The body shop had called another locksmith for a key replacement on a 2013 Equinox. That locksmith attempted the programming, got a security fault warning on the dash mid-sequence, and walked off the job. The body shop foreman called me.

When I got there, the vehicle was throwing a persistent "service theft deterrent" type warning and wouldn't respond to a fresh programming attempt through the OBD port. The previous attempt had left the body control module in a fault state. Some tools will just loop and error out at that point, and that's when locksmiths pack up and tell you to call a flatbed.

I had my bench programming gear in the van. I pulled the BCM, read the security data directly from the module, cleared the fault state, and rebuilt the handshake from the ground up before touching the new key. Once the module was clean, the new flip key programmed on the first pass. Both sides - transponder and remote - verified working.

I walked the body shop guys through what had happened so they'd know what to tell a customer if it ever came up again. The whole job ran about an hour and a half. Longer than a normal replacement, but it finished same-day, on-site, for a fraction of what a dealer with a flatbed tow would have run.

Chevrolet Equinox Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Are you licensed and insured to work on Chevrolet vehicles in California?▼

Yes. EZ Car Keyz holds a California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services locksmith license, which is the state body that regulates automotive locksmith work here. We carry full liability insurance. For GM vehicles with an immobilizer, the programming requires professional-grade tools and verified access to security data - you want someone with proper credentials and a paper trail handling that, not a random guy with a clone device he bought online.
