Guy near Soule Park Golf Course called about his 2021 Equinox. Push-to-start worked fine, but the remote functions were dead. No lock, no unlock, no panic, no remote start. Just the proximity part still talking to the car.
I pulled up to find him standing there with both key fobs, clicking away at nothing. Classic GM BCM desync. The body control module had dropped the remote portion while keeping the passive entry alive.
First move was checking his HYQ4EA fob with my RF detector. Strong signal at 433.92 MHz. Battery tested at 3.1V. Hardware was fine. I plugged into the OBD port and ran the remote relearn through my Tech2Win clone. The BCM needed both fobs presented in sequence, then a specific button press pattern to restore the link.
Ten minutes later, both remotes were clicking locks again. He mentioned the dealer wanted to replace the BCM for over a grand. They probably never tried the relearn procedure that's right there in document 5913315.
These proximity fobs get blamed for a lot of BCM software hiccups. Half the time it's not even the key that's broken.
